All questions about the workshops should be directed to Tina Enderlein at tme10@psu.edu, (814) 865-1221. For workshops requiring a fee, please contact Tina to make payment arrangements. Registration is available at https://secure.gradsch.psu.edu/cosign/workshops/GIS/act_register.cfm

Introduction to GIS (Free Workshop)

This workshop will provide a basic introduction through discussion and a PowerPoint presentation of the concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) including examples of the capabilities a GIS offers. Additional topics in this workshop will include a discussion of spatial data, GIS uses and application, GIS data types, software architecture and data files, queries, data sources, and GIS training options at Penn State. This workshop is a two-hour discussion of concepts with time for a question and answer session towards the end of the workshop.

The workshop is offered as the introduction for continuation into a four-part GIS workshop series.

Basic Skills (Free Workshop)

This workshop is the first in a four-part series of short workshops offered and is a one day instructor lead, hands-on, workshop providing short lectures on the topics being covered in the exercises. This workshop is limited to 16 people due to the limited size of the computers lab. The workshops will require participants to work through exercises using GIS data provided during the workshop. Topics to be discussed include learning the ESRI ArcGIS Desktop interface, data files, raster and vector models, drawing features, adding feature datasets to a map document, understanding coordinate systems and projections, spatial and attribute queries, and creating layouts and printed maps.

GIS Analysis I (Cost: $45)

This workshop is the second in a four-part series of short workshops offered and is a one day instructor lead, hands-on, workshop providing short lectures on the topics being covered in the exercises. This workshop is limited to 16 people due to the limited size of the computers lab. The workshops will require participants to work through exercises using GIS data provided during the workshop. Topics to be discussed include getting data into ArcGIS, using ArcCatalog, data display, data queries, and spatial queries.

GIS Analysis II (Cost: $45)

This workshop is the third in a four-part series of short workshops offered and is a one day instructor lead, hands-on, workshop providing short lectures on the topics being covered in the exercises. This workshop is limited to 16 people due to the limited size of the computers lab. The workshops will require participants to work through exercises using GIS data provided during the workshop. Topics to be discussed include joining and relating tabular data, display of image data, creating and editing a shapefiles, understanding projections, and creating new files from a selected set.

GIS Analysis III (Cost: $45)

This workshop is the fourth in a four-part series of short workshops offered and is a one day instructor lead, hands-on, workshop providing short lectures on the topics being covered in the exercises. This workshop is limited to 16 people due to the limited size of the computers lab. The workshops will require participants to work through exercises using GIS data provided during the workshop. Topics to be discussed include image processing as used with GIS image data in Multispec.
